Proactive Testing Isolates Bacteria Problem
(posted 8.5.09)
Ensuring water quality in the distribution system requires routine sampling by the Speedway Water Department.
The water department stumbled on a problem at one of the four testing locations
during last months' inspection.
Steve Hurst, water superintendent, said one of the routine sample locations, the Speedway Gas Station on16th Street, tested positive for total Coliform. He emphasized that it is a "harmless bacteria."
He said the positive test reading required the department to test on each
side of the business location to isolate the problem. The two adjacent
buildings, including Speedway Monogramming, tested negative. The testing
was conducted by an independent certified laboratory.
With the problem isolated, the town returned to the Speedway Station for
further testing. Hurst said the problem was resolved by adding disinfectant
to the spigot. The department also recommended the station change the spigot.
