Speedway Cancels National Night Out

(posted 8.4.09)

Assistant Chief Joel Rush has announced the cancelation of National Night Out due to the large amount of rain and severe weather in the area.

Just after 2pm the rainfall total for the day had reached 3.68", braking the old record of 1.52" set in 1903. A wind gust of 67 mph was reported at the airport just after noon. Lightning was intense enough around 2 am to turn off street lights, and the skies were dark enough about 1 pm to cause the lights to turn on.

The county activated its Emergency Operations Center in response to the warnings issued by the National Weather Service. IPL is reporting approximately 17,000 customers without power, mostly on the east and south sides of the county.
