Indianapolis International is only the second airport in the nation to be awarded the StormReady designation by the National Weather Service. StormReady communities meet a series of guidelines that provide a high level of preparation, warning and reaction to severe weather events. National Weather Service meteorologists made the presentation at the airport's operation center on Feb 18.

Hamilton, Johnson and Marion counties in central Indiana are among the 20 counties with StormReady designations in the state. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a StormReady partner. StormReady communities are required to have a 24 hour warning point, Emergency Operations Center, warning dissemination systems and community preparedness programs in order to receive the award.

The StormReady program is credited with saving the lives of more than 50 people in Ohio in 2002 when a tornado destroyed a movie theater shortly after the theater staff moved parents and children watching a movie into interior halls and restrooms. The storm, which killed 35, was strong enough that cars were thrown into the screen and front rows of seats that had been occupied minutes earlier.
