Town Council Still Debating Position on Zores

Speedway resident Sue Jent asked Speedway Town Councilors and town officials to be "proactive" and to step in as remonstrators to block Zore's variance request to build a 7,200 square foot recycling facility at 1300 N. Mickley. Zore's Metropolitan Development Board of Zoning Appeals variance hearing is scheduled for October 21 at the City County Building. Jent raised the zoning issue at the last council meeting and asked council for feedback for the September 22 meeting. The council did not officially take a position since the town manager is still researching the issue.

HEA1010 Tightened Eminent Domain Procedures

State Representative David Wolkins of Winona Lake, Indiana continues the fight to stop abusive eminent domain practices. Wolkins received applause from the Farm Bureau Eminent Domain 101 attendees for his legislation HEA 1010 that reformed many of the eminent domain practices. "I hope to get things fixed," he said to the crowd at the September 9 seminar. Wolkins explained that not all of his reforms made it into HEA 1010.

Conductor Prepares Hendricks Symphonic Orchestra for New Season

Hendricks Symphonic Orchestra conductor Benjamin G. Del Vecchio didn't expect to have 150 participants in the choir and orchestra when they organized the program last year.
The idea started when Del Vecchio's friends suggested forming a choir, so he supplemented the discussion with the need to create an orchestra. They thought 30 to 40 members seemed like a realistic number during the brainstorming session.

Redevelopment Commission Selects New PR Firm

Speedway Redevelopment Commission has now hired its third public relation firm since 2006. The commission approved the Hirons & Company contract with a 4-0-1 vote at its September 15 meeting. The commission's action also back dated the contract to become effective September 1.

Speed Zone Hearing Examiner Ruling Delayed

The Metropolitan Development Commission did not hear the resolution to create a special hearing examiner for Speedway concerning zoning issues for Speed Zone 1 and Speed Zone 2 at its September 17 as planned. The meeting is now scheduled for October 1. The delay was due to an inadvertent error leaving it off the agenda. The MDC could have heard the issue because notice was given in the newspapers, but chose not to. The MDC is expected to hear the proposed ordinance to create Speed 1 and 2 on October 15 at the City County Building.

Gateway Neighborhood Improves Entrance Appeal

Gateway West Neighborhood Association and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful volunteers began sprucing up the northwest corner of Gateway Drive and Moller Road on September 13. However, the volunteers were disappointed that the southeast corner could not receive the same landscaping improvements.

Second Annual Parade and Fall Festival Creates Smiles

Marion County Health and Hospital Corporation Director Dr. Virginia Caine was delighted to participate in the second annual Speedway Parade and Fall Festival on September 20, organized by the American Legion 500 Post and the Speedway Promoters Club.
