Special Examiner Proposed for Speed Zone Appeals(posted August 24)Dept of Metropolitan Development planner Tammara Tracy briefed the Development Commission on the progress of the special Speed Zone 1 and 2 districts during the pre-agenda August 20 meeting. DMD Director Maury Plambeck said "we are creating a new district in Speedway. That district is different than the zoning districts we have now. And we hope that if it works there, we can use it in other parts of Marion County, and the hearing examiner is part of that district process." << more >> Speedway Increasing Park Shelter Fees(posted August 24)Effective January 1, 2009, the Speedway Parks and Recreation Board will charge for a change of date or location when renting park shelters. In order to cover administrative tracking costs and the potential loss of shelter rent, a $25 fee will be charged for anyone changing a date or shelter site less than 21 days prior to their event. << more >> Speed Zone Job Gains Questioned(posted August 22)During the August 18 Speedway Redevelopment Commission's public comment session, Jo Ellen Dotlich questioned the commission on the number of jobs that will be created by the Speed Zone redevelopment. Dotlich was concerned that the number of jobs created would be too low to justify the bonding debt. << more >> Author Removes Cloak of Invisibility(posted August 21)David Sleppy never thought of himself as a photographer and writer, just a business owner of Figment II Inc. Fate changed that one day, when he was walking on a Toronto street and saw a young homeless man sleeping on the sidewalk. For some reason, the young man reminded Sleppy of own his son, who was studying physics at Washington University. The thought of "whose son is this?" resonated through Sleppy's mind. << more >> Pike Township Set For $1.5 Million Drainage Project(posted August 20)Residents in the Kessler Boulevard and Grandview Avenue area can express a sigh of relief soon. Mayor Ballard and the DPW announced a $1.5 million drainage relief project on the cul-de-sac of 57th Street. The flood prone intersection of Kessler and Grandview Avenue served as a backdrop for the announcement site. The intersection often becomes inundated with high water, forcing 16,000 motorists to seek alternative routes into the adjacent neighborhood of Crooked Creek. << more >> 21st Street Bridge Closing Monday(posted Aug 20)INDOT has announced that the 21st Street bridge over 465 will close Monday morning just after 7 am. Westbound traffic will be detoured south on High School Road to 10th Street, eastbound traffic will be routed south on Girls School Road to 10th or north to US 136. The closure is expected to last until early next year, depending on winter weather delays. Battle of the Bulge Survivors to be Honored in Parade(posted August 20)Bob Cooper of the 517th Parachute Infantry will be in the Speedway Parade on September 20. His mission is to keep the memory alive so "the people will not forget about the Battle of The Bulge." The battle started December 16, 1945 with Germany's plan to divide the Americans and British lines, so they could take Belgium and Antwerp and eventually win the war. But the Allies foiled the Axis power's mission and the battle ended January 25, 1945. << more >> |
