Fire Destroys Building in International Village

An intense wind driven blaze reduced one unit to rubble in International Village Monday afternoon. Firefighters arrived on scene to find a large column of smoke filling the sky from the building located along I465 just north of Hollister Drive.

Bond Issue Receives Favorable Recommendation

The Speedway Redevelopment Authority is one step closer to issuing bonds to start the redevelopment project for 16th Street and Main Street. The department of local finance tax board forwarded a favorable recommendation to the DLGF commissioner after listening to about 90 minutes of testimony and public comment on June 26. The meeting pivoted around the Speedway Redevelopment Commission's fiscal analysis to prove to the DLGF that tax increment revenues were sufficient to pay for bonds.

Water Bills Hit Boiling Point for Pike Residents

Veolia Water Indianapolis' continuing practice of estimating water bills struck a sensitive cord with ratepayers during a Q and A session at City County Councilor Janice McHenry's June 28 town hall meeting. Lu Ann Baker of Veolia could not quell the ratepayers concerns as residents insisted that it was an unfair system that forces them to pay estimated bills in the winter based on summer usage.

Property Tax Rebate Check Coming Soon

Homeowners can expect a 2006-2007 property tax rebate check by the middle of July after the county treasurer's office was not able to insert them with the June reconciliation bill. State representative Phil Hinkle said homeowners can find out if they are receiving a rebate check by calling the Marion County Treasurer's Office or going on line at indygov.org. That was just one of many issues discussed at Hinkle's June 26 Town Hall meeting.

Brownfield Advisory Recommends Seeking Petroleum Grant

The Speedway Brownfield Advisory Committee will submit a recommendation to the Speedway Redevelopment Commission to seek a Brownfield Petroleum Assessment Grant because the current EPA hazardous assessment grant does not cover petroleum contamination.

Area 2 Charette Delayed Again

The three-day Charette for Area 2 has been delayed for the second time this year. The meeting was tentatively scheduled for July 30 - August 1. The first Charette was scheduled for April 19 but was canceled.

Council Approves IMS Speed Zone Expansion

The Speedway Town Council finalized the redevelopment commission's resolution to include 41 acres of the IMS property into the Speed Zone. The June 23 5-0 vote officially makes this the Speed Zone's third expansion.

Sancho A Ham at Parade

The Clermont Old Fashion Day parade is just one of many parades John and Julie Camden and their children attend each year. The Camden's affinity for parades and small town festivals have them traveling as far as Crown Point to watch the Fourth of July parade to Pennsylvania to attend small town festivals. They are hoping the Speedway Parade will return this year.
