Homeless Men Leave Forwarding Address

(posted Sept 21)

Law Enforcement Code Officers Jereme Howery and Buddy Ellwanger made a return sweep for homeless campers under the bridge at 16th Street across from the Brickyard Crossing Golf and Resort Inn on September 19.

Howery said three homeless men were discovered by the Speedway Fire Department when they were dispatched to a fire at that location. Howery said he cited them for trespassing and wanted to make sure they had vacated the area. He said there were up to six men living under the bridge at one time.

Howery's job takes on new challenges every day. He said he had no idea when he took his job of code enforcement last year that he would be dealing with the homeless.

He quipped that the men gave a "forwarding address" that they were moving to the bridge at Holt and Michigan Road.

Howery said the men cited their reasons to live under a bridge because they claimed the homeless shelter residents are mentally ill or ex-offenders, and preferred not to reside with.

Howery noted the homeless do affect Speedway residents because it will require their tax dollars to send the street department out to clean up the site. He credited Street Commissioner Wendall Walters and his staff for their job keeping the mowing maintained at abandoned houses in Speedway as well as other not so pleasant jobs like trash removal.

Alex Fath, a student at Speedway High School, had no idea what he would see as he shadowed Howery and Ellwanger as part of his career day. Fath is thinking about seeking a career in law enforcement.

All the comforts of home.
A night stand, barbecue pit, Frisbee and alarm clock were some of the items discovered by code enforcement officers.
