Transfer Drive Gets Temporary Fix

(posted Sept 25)

Transfer Drive finally got its fill as of September 25. According to Wayne Township Deputy Assessor Earl Salisbury, township assessor Mike McCormack finally accomplished the job of what others have tried to do for the last eight years, repair Transfer Drive.

The private road, linking Rockville Road to 10th Street, has been in neglect of maintenance from the city because it is a private road. According to McCormack, the current property owner did not want to maintain the road and city did not want to accept it into its road system.

McCormack indicated at one point the road had over 90 potholes with one as deep as nine inches. He said cars finally started driving along the grass to avoid the potholes. McCormack wanted the road repair because the assessor's office is located at 351 Transfer Drive.

McCormack credited the solution as a team effort with Anna Peay and Bill Austin arranging for Fox Construction to dump ground up asphalt into the potholes. Fox Construction is milling the asphalt as part of the intersection improvement project at Raceway Road and Crawfordsville Road. He said the company filled the potholes at no expense to the taxpayers. He said it was also a win for the environment because the old milling was diverted from becoming trash refuse. McCormack recognized the repair is a temporary solution, but at least the road is passable now.
`
"I am driving 15 mph," he said, meaning that is an improved speed for drivers. McCormack noted that people don't realize the amount of traffic that uses the road. Approximately ten cars traveled the road within15 minutes.

Ray McAllister of B & W Plumbing said he was glad to see the improvement. He quipped that past potholes were more like residential basements.
