Rain Slows Traffic as Streets Flood

(posted Aug 20)

Monday afternoon's rain and thunderstorms slowed traffic in Speedway and the west side as streets flooded with the heavy downpour.  Speedway Police closed 25th Street between Philwood and Parkwood after the street flooded around 3.30 pm.  Speedway Drive between Cunningham and Whitcomb was also flooded from sidewalk to sidewalk. Residents were seen raking debris from storm drain inlets in an effort to reduce the water level.

Speedway firefighters responded to a tree on fire in the 1800 block of Ellen Drive after residents reported a lightning strike.  Shortly after the fire department arrived the fire burned through a large branch which fell into power lines before landing in a back yard.

The additional storm drains installed by the street department earlier this summer on 22nd Street between Crawfordsville Road  and Lynhurst appeared to have helped reduce the flooding in the 2000 and 2100 blocks of Gerrard and Allison.  This area has been prone to flooding and basement sewage backups during heavy storms

This fire burned though a large branch, causing it to split off from the trunk.

This ditch south of Coppertree apartments appears to have done its job of diverting water westward towards the 48" drain west of the complex.
