Speedway Merchants Association Seeks Mayor's Help

(posted Sept 18)

The Speedway Merchants Association is looking for another set of ears to hear the message as to why they feel the proposed vacation of Georgetown Road should be stopped. The SMA sent a letter with The Speedway Navigator to deliver to Mayor Bart Peterson during the Sept 17 exclusive interview on the 25th floor of the City County Building.

The Mayor read the letter and expressed his appreciation to be informed about the issues because the vacation of Georgetown Road and relocating 16th Street will involve city approval of the SRC's Master Plan and Regional Thoroughfare Plan.

President SMA Susan Luebbert said vacating Georgetown Road would isolate Main Street because it serves as the only direct north and south corridor to Main Street.

"It does not make sense to spend this huge amount of money on redevelopment if there is no direct north south access to Main Street," she said. The proposed thoroughfare plan projects about $63 million that also includes roundabouts and extending Holt Road north to 30th Street

Luebbert invited the Mayor to Speedway in hopes he would conduct a town hall meeting to listen to concerns.
