Chief Jeff Dine announced at the November police commission meeting that the long awaited police vehicle and property auction will take place this Saturday at 10 am at the Speedway Street Dept just south of the public safety building at 1410 N Lynhurst Dr.

Thirteen former police cars will be auctioned first, the chief advised the vehicles usually go pretty quickly and anticipated the found and unclaimed property auction would start by 10:30. Cash or certified checks are required to purchase vehicles, no titles will be issued until the clerk-treasurer has cleared the check.

The commission recognized several officers with letters of commendation.

Lt Dennis Anderson received recognition for calming down a man who had become violent during a domestic violence investigation. Det Jim Thiele, Lt Angel Rodriguez, Capt Alan Jones and Jay Adams received thank you letters from the Safe Kids project. Det Mirantha Wilson received a commendation for innovative investigative techniques.

Chief Dine said the street crimes unit has made numerous arrests in the last few weeks, resulting in the seizure of cocaine, guns and 12 pounds of marijuana.

Dine also reported that the asset forfeitures in drug cases this year have generated enough money to pay for the department's facility used to store confiscated vehicles for the next year.

Dine will have undercover officers assigned to the shopping center areas during the upcoming holiday shopping season. Now that the department is at full strength he can provide citizens with a special enforcement detail without compromising the department's ability to serve the town's day to day needs.

Assistant Chief Joel Rush reported that the reserve academy has delayed its start until the end of the month from its original Nov 8 date. The candidates who passed the physical agility test are in the process of undergoing polygraph exams.

Rush also announced the next crime watch meeting will be Dec 5 with members of the street crimes unit there to describe their role in crime prevention.
